An 18th century antique Welsh oak ChestReturn to category

This handsome chest or coffer, has a wealth of fielded panels, of typical alternating sizes,
it has a detachable lid.
Originally used for the storage of bedding, hence the interiror surface being so clean and dry, it would have been a bedroom piece, which is why the feet are intact.

This bold use of rectangular fielded panels is a design detail particularly popular in Breconshire and Glamorganshire during the 18th and early part of the 19th century. Typically the sides and back are also panelled.
