An open letter to AA Gill
Perhaps the antiques community should say to AA ‘Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated’. Happily our love of beauty is eternal. Whilst I have some sympathy for AAG’s perspective on the changing times and needs of society and whilst I definitely agree there are more people wanting to chart their own paths today than in bygone days...he is only really talking about how you come by items from the past. Whether my great grandfather leaves me his First World War watch or whether I spend a few glorious hours in a space dedicated to beautiful pieces cast and hewn centuries ago is not the point. He seems to forget that inside everyone’s heart is a need for deep, enriching connection. An admiration for human skill and craftsmanship. Today we are fortunate enough to have the choice to buy, to inherit, to live with the past as well as enjoy the future. Today we can do as we please and AAG and others like him will not be the complete arbiter of our taste. Sorry AA.
