We need to keep caring about our High Streets
19th August 2011
It is too soon to tell whether this mood of greater concern about the condition of our high streets will be sustained. But such an outcome is highly desirable. Even those who worry only about what their home is worth and rarely give a thought to their community will acknowledge that a thriving high street boosts prices.
In London some residents of the affluent of inner-city districts with unlovely main shopping streets
admitted to me this week that they wereseeing these roads with new eyes: "It may be scuzzy but its ours, and maybe we should show it some more affection and maybe spend some more of our money and time there, rather than getting all our grocies delivered".
My comment
Our High Streets are in increasing danger of closure, historically the high street has reflected the many changes in the way that we shop and the sort of items that we wish to purchase. Today, however, are we observing the end game? Will we all end up shopping on the web?
