An 18th century treen Grinder, probably Welsh
12th June 2011
A wooden object of great character, this grinder, probably for pepper or coffee.
It unscrews in the middle to reveal a perforated metal plate. A wonderfully tactile object, the main body is made of fruitwoood and part of the revolving handle is made of ash.
Probably Welsh, c.1740-60.
A very similar piece can be found in "Domestic Utensils of Wood" by Owen Evan-Thomas,
plate 33, page 85.
